Kimi AI from Moonshot AI has been quietly becoming one of the most capable AI assistants available — and its defining feature is jaw-dropping: a 1-million token context window.

To put that in perspective, that's roughly 750,000 words. You could feed it an entire novel, a full codebase, or years of company documents and ask questions about all of it at once.

Here's my full review after testing it for three weeks.

What Is Kimi AI?

Kimi is an AI assistant developed by Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based startup founded in 2023. Despite being relatively young, Moonshot AI has raised significant funding and built a model that competes seriously with Western counterparts.

The latest Kimi model (k1.5 and beyond) features:

  • Up to 1 million token context window
  • Multimodal support (text, images, documents)
  • Web search capability
  • Strong multilingual performance (especially Chinese and English)

Performance Testing

Long Document Analysis

This is Kimi's killer feature. I uploaded a 400-page financial report and asked it to:

  • Summarize key findings → Accurate, well-organized summary
  • Find all mentions of specific risk factors → Located 23 instances perfectly
  • Compare figures across different sections → Handled it without losing context

No other model I've tested handles documents this large this reliably.

Multilingual Capability

Kimi is exceptional at switching between Chinese and English mid-conversation. For users working across both languages, this is a major advantage. It understands context and nuance in both languages better than most Western models handle even just English.

Reasoning & Math

Performance here is strong but not best-in-class. On my standard reasoning test battery:

  • Math problems: 78% accuracy on competition-level problems
  • Logic puzzles: 82% correct
  • Multi-step reasoning: Good, occasionally loses track on very complex chains

Coding

Solid coding performance, particularly for Python and JavaScript. Where it stands out is handling entire codebases — feed it a large project and ask it to debug or refactor, and the 1M context window becomes a superpower.

Web Search

Kimi's built-in web search is fast and well-integrated. Ask it about recent events and it pulls current information without you needing to copy-paste articles.

Kimi vs ChatGPT vs Claude

| Feature | Kimi | ChatGPT Plus | Claude Pro | |---------|------|-------------|------------| | Context Window | 1M tokens | 128k tokens | 200k tokens | | Price | Free / ~$15/mo | $20/mo | $20/mo | | Web Search | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Image Input | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Best At | Long docs | General use | Reasoning/Writing | | Chinese Language | Excellent | Good | Good |

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Largest context window available (1M tokens)
  • Excellent multilingual support
  • Free tier is genuinely useful
  • Strong document analysis
  • Fast response times

Cons:

  • Less refined writing style than Claude
  • Reasoning not quite at Claude Fable level
  • Smaller ecosystem than OpenAI/Anthropic
  • Less known in Western markets (fewer integrations)

Pricing

Kimi offers a generous free tier with limited daily usage. Paid plans unlock higher usage limits and priority access. Pricing varies by region — check kimi.ai for current rates.

Who Should Use Kimi?

  • Anyone working with very long documents (research, legal, finance)
  • Users who work in both Chinese and English
  • Developers handling large codebases
  • People looking for a capable free alternative to ChatGPT

Final Verdict

Kimi AI is a serious contender in the AI assistant space. Its 1-million token context window is genuinely useful — not just a marketing number. If you frequently work with long documents or need strong Chinese-English bilingual support, Kimi should be your first choice.

For general-purpose use, it competes well with ChatGPT. For deep reasoning and writing quality, Claude Fable still has an edge.
